Summer Tales poster: children leap from the rocks into the sea in Alexandria while a woman watches from a balcony

Synopsis

In the wake of the death of the cousins she grew up with, and her mother's diagnosis with the same illness that took them, a woman reminisces about the summers of her childhood in Alexandria.

We go back to the summers of the '80s and '90s, an upper-middle-class family navigating socioeconomic changes, unraveling under the weight of absent fathers and husbands, while their children fill those summers with laughter, music, cinema, swimming, and above all, love.

Through the voice of the little girl she once was, the woman relives summer after summer with her cousins: a tight-knit group of boys and one girl whose bond deepens and shifts each year, as first love blooms, faith is questioned and each of them learns their own way of surviving what the adults around them cannot say out loud.

It's the journey of a girl discovering her femininity amid a world of boys, and a complicated, frustrated, and mentally unstable mother. The unbreakable bond between the girl and the boys she grew up with is tested by illness and death, leaving the woman with a burning desire to come to peace with her dying mother.
